I always laugh at people who do that.. "what an idiot... how did they even get past the gate agent?"
Well, I will no longer laugh
.
I had to go to a wedding in Vegas, so I flew San Jose > LAX > Las Vegas and back (I could fly direct from SFO, but I wanted more miles!)
Yesterday morning on my way back... I was in the LAX Red Carpet Club. I emerged about 30 minutes prior to departure and made my way over to the gates 80-88 leg of LAX, where the United Express planes depart.
The gate changed for my flight from 82 to 81. I never received the gate change update via easyupdate and I was in the Red Carpet Club so I didn't hear it. I walk toward the gates and I see that gate 82 is boarding... still group 1, too. I walk up to the gate agent and hand her my boarding pass. Her computer/machine was down or something because she was just tearing off the big half and piling them up - not entering them or scanning them. I proceed down the jetbridge, put my carry-on at the end, and get onto the plane. I immediately notice that this is an ExPlus configured regional jet. Interesting, it wasn't an ExPlus on the seat map..
I have seat 2B, a seat that doesn't exist on the ExPlus. Maybe it was an equipment change? I show my boarding pass to the flight attendant.. "My seat doesn't exist on this aircraft."
She looks at it and says to me, "...that's because you aren't going to Tucson."
in the word of the kids on the internet these days, pwned.
Luckily, I wasn't in the back where I wouldn't have noticed my mistake until my carry-on was already loaded into the belly!
I did the walk of shame out of the plane. The gate agent said that she was just about to come find me (although she had to search for her pile for the other half of my boarding pass, so I think she was just trying to cover up for something she should have caught - funny regardless).
On the bright side, I just hit premier executive status (50k miles flown this year).
