Valentine-1 Radar Detector Install

I highly recommend using Madrussian's how-to - it's much better than mine :)

Hard wiring the Valentine-1 in the E46 is incredibly easy. In summary, you pull down the headliner console area, clip the blue 3M snap clip that comes with the V1 to the universal garage door wiring harness (all E46s have this), screw the ground into the sunroof motor mount hole (there's an equivalent place if you don't have a sunroof), shove the junction box that comes with the V1 into the headliner area, and run a few inches of cable down to the windshield (by squeezing it through the headliner area).

Here are some pictures:

Place a electrical tape wrapped screwdriver just behind the center button of the light console and gently pry it out. Once you've done that, you can gently pull out the large headliner console piece that contains the sunroof switch.

Here's a picture of the junction box that you must place in the headliner. There's plenty of room to the sides above the sun visors.

When I was looking for the universal garage door opener connector, I found this one - this is NOT the right one. This is actually for the microphone if you have a phone or bluetooth kit installed.

I finally found the right connector above the sun visor area. It's wrapped in black tape - after removing the black tape, the connector will look identical to the WRONG one above. The only difference is the color coming out of the wires.

Unwrap the black tape and connect the 3M wire tap to the GREEN/BLUE striped wire. Then simply attach the red V1 power wire to the 3M wire tap.

I don't have a picture of where to attach the ground - just find the silver 8mm hex nut. Your BMW toolkit has a wrench that will fit it. Unscrew it a bit, wedge the V1 ground pin around it, then re-tighten.

Here you can see I'm pulling down the headrest - you can see a horizontal slit of windshield - this is where you press through the phone cord that attaches to the V1.

Buttoning it all up is the reverse of the take-apart. Finally, this is what your hardwired V1 looks like!

headliner console area

What if I don't have the headliner console area. I've just got the light hole. None of the light wires is hot all the time. Where do I get +12V from? Thx, cheerz

Nice job

Very nice and clean install, I love these detectors!

junction box

where can i buy a junction box like the one shown in the picture above... Thanks, John

radar detector install

xxxi custom built some 'blocks' to lower the right visor about half an inch. then i shoved the valentine one above the visor. I ran the telephone wire down along the window column, tapped into the fuse box in the glove compartment, and then ran from there to the center console, where i put the remote display in the cigarette ash compartment. completely hidden from all views, you'd have to look for it to find it (thieves and cops). works absolutely perfectly.
